उसने अनेक कहानियां लिखीं तो सही, लेकिन वक़्त निकालकर उसने वे दोबारा नहीं पढ़ीं। कि फिर एक दिन उसने पढ़ने के लिए उनमें से 'अवध' कहानी को चुना। वह दंग रह गया, जब उसने पाया कि वह कहानी अपने मूल स्वरूप से लगभग पूरी तरह बदल चुकी थी – शांति के पक्षधर अवध राज्य के अर्ध भाग पर आततायी शासक रत्नाकर ने पहले छल और फिर बल प्रयोग कर अपनी हुकूमत का महल खड़ा कर लिया था। प्रजा पर बेरहमी से कोड़े बरसाए जाने लगे। उनसे मनमाना कर वसूला जाने लगा।
अवध का परंपरागत शासक भद्रनाथ विवश होता गया। रत्नाकर की अपेक्षा वह सैन्य रूप से अधिक शक्तिशाली नहीं था।
